Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What Insurance do you take
Dr. Fernandez participates in a vast number of insurance plans. He is a preferred provider for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama and are also providers for Medicare, TRICARE, United HealthCare, HealthSprings, Aetna, AARP, Cigna, Cigna Allegiance, GEHA, Humana, Medicaid, and Worker’s Compensation. Additional insurance policies are accepted so if you don’t see yours listed here, please call our office at 256-882-1908.

Some insurance plans require a referral from your assigned primary care physician including Medicaid, TRICARE Prime, Cigna HealthSprings, and United Healthcare Compass. If you are not sure if you need a referral, please contact your insurance provider or our office. We will be happy to assist you.

Q: How much will my insurance policy pay?
Payment by an insurance company varies from policy to policy. Therefore, it is impossible to give you a guaranteed quote at the time of service. We estimate your portion based on the most up-to-date information we have, but it is only an estimate.

Most patients have an insurance policy that covers the majority of the fees charged for surgery and office/hospital visits. Typically a portion of the balance is assigned by the insurance company to the patient in the form of a copay, coinsurance, deductible, etc.

Our staff makes every effort possible to verify your insurance coverage based on what you and/or your carrier have represented to us. However, insurance has become increasingly complicated. If you have any questions concerning your coverage, please discuss this with your insurance company before surgery. Please note that all copays are required at check-in.

Q: What should I bring with me to my first appointment?
Please bring your insurance card(s), a photo ID, your copayment, and a list of your medications (including dosage, and the frequency at which you take it). Please include any over-the-counter vitamins and supplements.

Q: Do I need to have any tests (e.g. labs, ultrasound) prior to my first appointment with Dr. Fernandez?
If your referring physician has not ordered any tests, Dr. Fernandez will determine upon examination if any are required.

Q: Do I need to fast prior to my first appointment with Dr. Fernandez?
No. If any tests that require fasting are necessary, they will be scheduled for a future date.

Q: Do I need to bring a driver to my first appointment?
No. This visit is an initial consultation only. You and Dr. Fernandez will discuss any treatment options.

Q: Do I need to bring my prescription medications with me to my appointment?
Regarding your current medications, we need to know: the medicine, dosage, and the frequency at which you take it. This includes any over-the-counter vitamins and supplements. You can bring a list of this information to your appointment.

Q: Will I owe a copay for my visit?
Prior to your appointment, we will verify your insurance details. When we call to remind you of your appointment, we will notify you if a copayment is due. Copayments are due at the time of appointment.

Q: How soon can I drive after surgery?
In most cases, when you are no longer on pain medication and your response and reaction times have returned to normal, you may drive. Any concerns can be addressed during your post-operative appointment.

Q: How soon will I have to come back to see the doctor after my surgery?
In most cases, the post-operative appointment is scheduled for two to three weeks after the date of the surgery.
